The outside stalls have dominated the Prince of Wales’s Stakes over the last five years.

This G1 race, run over 2000m, often attracts a small field. The most runners to line up in the last five years was eight. The only time the winner was drawn in the lower bracket, there was just five runners. The horse drawn in stall six has won three times.

About the Jockeys

It’s no surprise Ryan Moore has the best recent record in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

As number one jockey to powerful Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, he gets lots of fancied rides in the top G1 races. In fact, Moore has ridden the favourite in each of the last five years in this 2000m contest.

He was successful on LOVE in 2021, having first won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on HIGHLAND REEL four years earlier. In this year’s race, Moore is will ride for last year’s Derby hero AUGUSTE RODIN.

John Gosden has won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes twice in the last four years from just four runners.

The multiple British champion trainer has won the G1 prize five times, overall, during his long career. The last of his four victories as sole trainer came with LORD NORTH in 2020. His son Thady had, officially, joined him on the training licence when MOSTAHDAF was successful last year.

They are likely to be represented by top-class mare INSPIRAL this year. LORD NORTH could also return for a third crack at the race he won four years ago.

About the Favourites

2019 MAGICAL 2

LOVE was the only market leader to come home in front in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes in the last five years.

Three of the favourites finished runner-up in that time. LUXEMBOURG couldn’t lay a glove on MOSTAHDAF last year and BAY BRIDGE was a shade of odds-on when beaten by STATE OF REST in 2022. MAGICAL also filled the silver medal position five years ago.

It generally pays to look outside the top few, but having said that CRYSTAL OCEAN was sent off second favourite when successful in 2019.

The last winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes to be trained outside of Britain and Ireland was 14 years ago in 2010 when Andre Fabre’s BYWORD was successful.

It was another French-trained horse, GRAND GLORY, who fared best in recent years. She was third of five runners – just in front of Japan-trained SHAHRYAR in 2022, but neither could get near to front-running winner STATE OF REST.

France heads the overseas challenge this year. Dual French Classic heroine BLUE ROSE CEN and Prix d’Ispahan runner-up HORIZON DORE are among the possible runners.
