Gold Cup

The oldest and one of the most famous races through five days of Royal Ascot, first run since 1807, has long been regarded as the most genuine test of stamina, and it takes more than a special stayer to land this coveted prize. STRADIVARIUS prevailed thrice in recent years, and the great YEATS, who reigned supreme consecutively from 2006 to 2009 for Aidan O’Brien, the race’s most successful trainer with eight scores. While YEATS’ fourth victory in 2009 will go down in Royal Ascot folklore for years to come, perhaps an even more special moment was ESTIMATE’s triumph in 2013 for Her Majesty The Queen. ESTIMATE was the first filly to win the famous race since 1991 and the first horse ever to win the Gold Cup for a reigning monarch.

Aidan O’Brien has worked his magic in several of the most important Flat races this season already and he conjured another brilliant success here in bringing KYPRIOS back from injury to land his second Gold Cup.

The son of GALILEO won Royal Ascot’s showpiece in 2022 but was forced to miss the event last season after suffering a near career-ending injury, but such is the mastery of his trainer, he has been brought back to his best this campaign.

He had to be tough at the finish as he chased down the pace-making TRAWLERMAN, who battled back once headed, but KYPRIOS had too much at the finish and crossed the line a length ahead under the imperious Ryan Moore.

Moore had already broken Frankie Dettori’s record for winners at the modern Royal Ascot meeting earlier in the day, and he made no mistake as he got KYPRIOS home to ensure the 6YO entered the history books in becoming the 22nd horse to win multiple Gold Cups.
