Commonwealth Cup

First run since 2015, this race has been an outright success, protecting precocious 3YOs that are short on experience from battling older horses head-on in the two traditional, open-age G1 sprints: the King’s Stand Stakes or Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. The inaugural winner MUHAARAR claimed his first G1 success in this race and then went on to land three more G1 prizes straight after. Frankie Dettori has won two of the last four renewals on ADVERTISE in 2019 and US trained-CAMPANELLE in 2021 to be the race’s leading rider.

Commonwealth Cup Results

The Commonwealth Cup, a G1 for 3YO sprinters over 1200m, has been one of the best introductions to British racing in recent years and INISHERIN was a hugely impressive winner for trainer Kevin Ryan and jockey Tom Eaves.

The race was created for horses that don’t stay the 1600m distance but also means they don’t have to take on the older sprinters at such an early stage of their careers.

It worked out perfectly for INISHERIN, who finished sixth in the 2000 Guineas two starts ago when seemingly not seeing out the distance. Bred for 1600m, he doesn’t look like a sprinter, but he clearly is one and never looked in danger, finishing 2¼ lengths clear of LAKE FOREST with JASOUR in third.

Connections will now surely look at Newmarket’s G1 July Cup for his next start.
