About the barriers
Commonwealth Cup (2019 to 2023)
Barrier | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
1-5 | 3 | 2 | 0 |
6-10 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
11-15 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
16 and above | 0 | 1 | 1 |
Most winners of the Commonwealth Cup in the last five renewals have jumped from barriers 1-5, most recently with SHAQUILLE last year (drawn 4). Barriers 1-5 have also produced two second-placed horses since 2019.
Barriers 6-10 have only produced one winner since 2019 with GOLDEN HORDE in 2020, but have provided three third-placed horses in that time.
Barriers 11-15 have had a winner, with CAMPANELLE in 2021, as well as two second-placed horses and one third-placed finisher.
Stalls 16 or above have a poor record, providing no winners in the last five years, but have snatched a second-placed and third-placed finish.
About the Jockeys
Hot Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Year | Oisin Murphy’s rides in the Commonwealth Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | SHAQUILLE | 1 |
2022 | - | - |
2021 | DRAGON SYMBOL | 2 |
2020 | SHADN | 10 |
2019 | FOREVER IN DREAMS | 2 |
Frankie Dettori holds the strongest jockey’s record in the Commonwealth Cup, riding in the race four times, winning it twice.
Oisin Murphy has won the race once since 2019, but has also finished second twice. He will ride EVADE in the Commonwealth Cup this year.
About the Trainers
Hot Trainer: Richard Fahey
Year | Richard Fahey’s runners in the Commonwealth Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | - | - |
2022 | PERFECT POWER | 1 |
2021 | - | - |
2020 | VENTURA REBEL | 3 |
2019 | - | - |
As far as domestic trainers are concerned, Richard Fahey’s recent record catches the eye. Fahey has only sent two horses to the race in the past five years and yielded one win and a placed finish, so don’t disregard his runners MALC this year.
About the Favourites
Commonwealth Cup Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)
Year | Favourite | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | LITTLE BIG BEAR | 2 |
2022 | PERFECT POWER EL CABALLO |
1 18 |
2021 | SUESA | 8 |
2020 | LOPE Y FERNANDEZ | 11 |
2019 | TEN SOVEREIGNS | 4 |
Commonwealth Cup favourites have a poor record of winning the race. Only PERFECT POWER, joint-favourite in 2022, has been able to win the race as favourite, although his joint favourite, EL CABALLO, finished well down the field in 18th.
It’s worth noting that Aidan O’Brien has trained three of the past five favourites, and none of them have won, with LITTLE BIG BEAR going closest in 2022 when finishing second.
All of the past five winners have gone off 9/1 or shorter, so the data would suggest following the market support and that big-priced horses don’t have a strong record.
