Gold Cup Day (20 Jun, Thursday)
About the barriers
Gold Cup (2019 to 2023)
Barrier | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
1-5 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
6-10 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
11-15 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
16 and above | 0 | 0 | 0 |
In the Gold Cup, horses drawn in the inside stalls 1-5 have produced the most winners, being successful in four out of the last five years.
There have only been two horses from stalls 11-15 that have placed in the last five years. It’s worth remembering that in that time the maximum field has been 12 and there have only been 11 or more runners in three of the last five years.
Generally, there seems to be a small advantage to be had from having an inner draw in the Gold Cup.
About the Jockeys
Hot Jockey: Ryan Moore
Year | Ryan Moore’s rides in the Gold Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | EMILY DICKINSON | 4 |
2022 | KYPRIOS | 1 |
2021 | SERPENTINE | 8 |
2020 | NAYEF ROAD | 2 |
2019 | FLAG OF HONOUR | 5 |
Frankie Dettori has had an astonishing record in the Gold Cup in the last five years, largely due to his association with the great STRADIVARIUS, who won in 2019 and 2020 and ran big races to finish fourth and third in 2021 and 2022.
Dettori was also successful in last year’s renewal aboard COURAGE MON AMI, but now riding in the USA, Dettori is unlikely to be in action at Royal Ascot this year.
Other riders to watch out for is Ryan Moore, who won in 2022 aboard KYPRIOS. Moore is likely to be aboard KYPRIOS, who missed last year’s race though injury.
About the Trainers
Hot Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Year | John & Thady Gosden’s runners in the Gold Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | COURAGE MON AMI | 1 |
2022 | STRADIVARIUS | 3 |
2021 | STRADIVARIUS | 4 |
2020 | STRADIVARIUS (trained by John Gosden) | 1 |
2019 | STRADIVARIUS (trained by John Gosden) | 1 |
Trainers John & Thady Gosden won last year’s Gold Cup with COURAGE MON AMI, carrying on the stable’s fine record in Royal Ascot’s showpiece event. Before 2021 John Gosden had been the sole name on the training license, and won two Gold Cups with STRADIVARIUS in that time from only two runners. John & Thady Gosden are likely to be represented by GREGORY and TRAWLERMAN this year.
About the Favourites
Gold Cup Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)
Year | Favourite | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | COLTRANE | 2 |
2022 | KYPRIOS | 1 |
2021 | STRADIVARIUS | 4 |
2020 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
2019 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
In the last five years, favourites have had an exceptional record in the Gold Cup, winning three of the last five renewals. STRADIVARIUS (twice) and KYPRIOS were the winning favourites and last year’s favourite COLTRANE was beaten less than a length into second.
The favourite has only finished outside the first three once in the last five years, while only three horses priced 10/1 or more have finished in the frame, suggesting that it may be best to look towards shorter-priced runners at the top of the market.

There have been 21 overseas runners in the Gold Cup in the last five years, with the majority being from Ireland. Overseas runners have won once in that time courtesy of KYPRIOS in 2022, and placed a further two times.
Irish horses have the best record of overseas runners in the Gold Cup, with three horses hitting the frame in the last five years, while the best finishing position for a horse from another country in that time was 8th, achieved by France’s CALLED TO THE BAR in 2019.
Ireland are the only overseas nation set to be represented in this year’s Gold Cup and the Irish have a strong hand, with favourite KYPRIOS will fight for another glory in this prestigious G1.
