The 1600m G1 Doncaster Mile was first run in 1866 and is a race steeped in the tradition of Randwick. In many ways it is the signature race of the famous track with so many legends taking on the challenge of a rich handicap.

While one of so many highlights on Day 1 of The Championships, it is the richest of them and has attracted both some of the best domestic talent as well as some fascinating global interest.

Japan has a rich history of winning big races both internationally, but also in Australia, and just last November OBAMBURUMAI became the first winner from around the world to salute in the AU$10m Golden Eagle. They have taken up the challenge again having arrived into Sydney recently with the view to running in the Doncaster Mile.

He is potentially to be opposed by The Everest hero THINK ABOUT IT, recent Randwick Guineas winner, champion trainer Chris Waller’s arsenal of talent headed by KOVALICA, LINDERMANN and ZOUGOTCHA plus Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s filly TROPICAL SQUALL.

Also on the card is the 1200m G1 T J Smith Stakes which is the biggest WFA sprint in the Autumn. The Everest placegetters PRIVATE EYE and I WISH I WIN are aimed there with Godolphin’s sprinters CYLINDER and AFT CABIN other contenders.

The 3YOs head to the classic distance for the G1 2400m Australian Derby which is shaping up as an open race. Spring Champion Stakes winner TOM KITTEN is one of the headline acts but could we see a filly become a late player?

Finally the 1400m G1 Sire Produce Stakes for the 2YOs adds to the features and the Golden Slipper form is always to be considered with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s LADY OF CAMELOT just winning the Slipper on 23 Mar.
