The only jockey to have won the Sussex Stakes twice in this period is Jim Crowley, the retained rider for Shadwell Farms who provided both of his winners with BAAEED successful in 2022 and MOHAATHER two years prior. Oisin Murphy, Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore rode the other winners with Moore also placed on two further occasions. Aidan O’Brien has a strong entry and Moore will have the pick with St James’s Palace second HENRY LONGFELLOW appearing to be their leading candidate.

Aidan O’Brien and Moore combined to win last year’s renewal with PADDINGTON O’Brien has also saddled two runner-ups – and a third – to earn him the ‘hot trainer’ accolade. O’Brien has HENRY LONGFELLOW this year. The outstanding candidate having finished second to ante-post favourite ROSALLION, trained by Richard Hannon (one third in this period) at Royal Ascot.

About the Favourites

Sussex Stakes Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)

Year Favourite Finishing Position
2023 PADDINGTON 1
2022 BAAEED 1
2021 POETIC FLARE 2
2020 SISKIN 3
2019 TOO DARN HOT 1

The Sussex Stakes has been a good race for favourites of late with three of the five successful, two of whom were returned at odds-on and the other only fractionally longer so racing fans should not be put off by those at short odds. However, all five renewals have been won by horses at short prices so racing fans should be wary of siding with any runner at long odds. The two beaten favourites in this period finished second and third so it is fair to say that the market has done a very good job of identifying the leading protagonists.

Runners from Ireland have provided 11 of the 14 overseas runners in the Sussex Stakes with Japan represented just once and France twice. The Japanese runner was sent off at long odds and ran respectably in fourth as did DUHAIL for France in 2021 but his compatriot FACTEUR CHEVAL surpassed those efforts in chasing home the Irish-trained PADDINGTON last year. The latter was trained by Aidan O’Brien who has provided the lion’s share of the Irish runners and is the sole trainer with an entry from Ireland this year. FACTEUR CHEVAL could again represent France.
