The G1 Sussex Stakes is the showpiece of day two of the Goodwood Festival. Originally created as a race for 2YOs in 1841, it became a 1600m contest for 3YOs in 1878 before being opened up to 4YOs in 1960. Older horses have been able to run in the race since 1975 and it now often provides a fascinating clash between the Classic generation and their older counterparts. The mighty FRANKEL stands alone as the only horse ever to have won the race twice in 2011 and 2012. Those victories helped propel his legendary trainer Sir Henry Cecil to a record seven Sussex Stakes wins. His owner, Khalid Abdulla has also had his famous Juddmonte silks carried to success in this race by brilliant miler KINGMAN, who was an impressive winner in 2014 campaign that yielded four G1 wins.

Sussex Stakes Results
The 2024 renewal of the 1600m G1 Sussex Stakes was won by NOTABLE SPEECH, providing owners Godolphin with their first victory in the race for 17 years. NOTABLE SPEECH became the first 2000 Guineas winner to follow-up in the Sussex Stakes since FRANKEL won both races in 2011.
HENRY LONGFELLOW, second to the absent ROSALLION at Royal Ascot, made the running but was pestered for the lead by outsider SONNY LISTON with NOTABLE SPEECH tracking them in third. William Buick switched the winner towards the inside at the cutaway and NOTABLE SPEECH quickened sharply to hit the front.
The patiently ridden MALJOOM and FACTEUR CHEVAL were separated by a neck at the line. They finished well towards the centre of the course, pulling a length and a half clear of the remainder but were beaten the same distance by NOTABLE SPEECH who could now go to the Breeders’ Cup.
