The historic Goodwood Cup is the headline act on the opening day of the Goodwood Festival. First run in 1812, the 3200m staying contest was promoted to G1 status in 2017 and serves as the middle leg of what is widely regarded as the British stayers’ Triple Crown, preceded by the Gold Cup and followed by the Doncaster Cup in September. Only seven horses have achieved this notable treble, the most recent being outstanding stayer STRADIVARIUS in 2019. The John Gosden-trained star, the only 3YO winner of the race this century, won four Goodwood Cups, two under Andrea Atzeni and two under Frankie Dettori. The much-celebrated PERSIAN PUNCH became the first 10YO to win a Goodwood Cup when he won the race for a second time in 2003.

Goodwood Cup Results
The 2024 renewal of the 3200m G1 Goodwood Cup was won by KYPRIOS, providing trainer Aidan O’Brien with a fourth success in the race. It was a second Goodwood Cup for KYPRIOS who also won this prize in 2022; YEATS also won two renewals for O’Brien.
Confirmed front runner AL QAREEM pestered GREGORY for the lead in the early stages before taking over with KYPRIOS settled in third by Ryan Moore, racing wide on the course in the home straight.
KYPRIOS quickened over 400m from home, quickly taking the advantage in the centre of the track while TRUESHAN looked for room on the inside at the cutaway and SWEET WILLIAM made ground from the rear.
TRUESHAN’s run was short lived and although SWEET WILLIAM continued to make up ground, he never made any real inroads into KYPRIOS’ advantage and was all out to deny stablemate GREGORY second place.
