About the barriers
Nassau Stakes (2019 to 2023)
Barrier | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
1-5 | 3 | 5 | 4 |
6-10 | 2 | 0 | 1 |
11-15 | - | - | - |
16 and above | - | - | - |
The Nassau Stakes has attracted fields of between six and nine runners over the past five seasons. Those drawn in barriers 1-5 have provided one more winner than barriers 6-10 but have been represented by more than twice as many runners; they have, though, dominated the place positions. No barrier has provided the winner more than once in this period although draw 4 has been responsible for three third finishes as well as one winner. No winner has emerged from either draw 1 or draw 2 and runners from those two barriers have only placed twice (one from each).
About the Jockeys
Hot Jockey: Ryan Moore
Year | Ryan Moore’s rides in the Nassau Stakes | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | ABOVE THE CURVE | 2 |
2022 | CONCERT HALL | 8 |
2021 | JOAN Of ARC | 3 |
2020 | FANCY BLUE | 1 |
2019 | HERMOSA | 9 |
Ryan Moore and Jim Crowley have both ridden a winner, a second and a third in this period while Hollie Doyle has been first and third in the last two runnings. Moore’s victory came on FANCY BLUE for Donnacha O’Brien in 2020, he was second in 2023 for Joseph O’Brien and third for their father, Aidan, in 2021. Neither Doyle nor Crowley look likely to have a ride in 2024 but Moore’s regular stable is represented by OPERA SINGER.
About the Trainers
Hot Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Year | John & Thady Gosden’s runners in the Nassau Stakes | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | NASHWA | 3 |
2022 | NASHWA | 1 |
2021 | - | - |
2020 | NAZEEF | 3 |
2019 | MEHDAAYIH | 2 |
John Gosden completed a hat-trick between 2012 and 2014 but had to wait until 2022 to add to his success in the race, when training in partnership with his son Thady. NASHWA was the filly who took gold and was well fancied 12 months ago but could only finish third. Gosden (John) saddled the third in 2020 and the runner-up in 2019 and didn’t have a runner in the 2021 renewal. The stable will be represented by EMILY UPJOHN this year.
About the Favourites
Nassau Stakes Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)
Year | Favourite | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | BLUE ROSE CEN | 4 |
2022 | NASHWA | 1 |
2021 | JOAN OF ARC AUDARYA |
3 5 |
2020 | MAGIC WAND | 5 |
2019 | HERMOSA | 9 |
Only NASHWA has justified favouritism in the last five years and none of the other favourites have finished better than third so this has not been a good race for market leaders. Three of the other five (joint-favourites in 2021) were trained by Aidan O’Brien and finished third, fifth and ninth. Only two of the six runners were a longer price than last year’s winner AL HUSN but only one winner could be described as having been returned at long odds with runners towards the top of the market collecting the other two renewals.

Runners from Ireland are usually well represented but the Nassau Stakes has also attracted runners from France and Japan in recent years. DEIDRE was a surprise winner for Japan in 2019 before returning the following year to finish seventh. French runner BLUE ROSE CEN disappointed as favourite in 2023 when ABOVE THE CURVE was second for Joseph O’Brien; his brother, Donnacha, went one better in 2020 when FANCY BLUE led home a 1-2 for Irish trained runners. Their father, Aidan, has fared less well with a third place finish the best his seven representatives have managed.
