Key Contenders for Sussex Stakes

HENRY LONGFELLOW (3YO, Colt)

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Sire: DUBAWI
Dam: MINDING
Dam’s Sire: GALILEO
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 3-1-0-5

Beautifully bred, very smart performer who was unbeaten in three starts at the Curragh as a juvenile, winning maiden, Futurity Stakes and National Stakes in the space of less than two months. Disappointing favourite in Poule d’Essai des Poulains on reappearance in May but back to form when neck second to ROSALLION in St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, getting first run and only headed in the final 50m. Strong claims once more.

NOTABLE SPEECH (3YO, Colt)

Trainer: Charlie Appleby

Sire: DUBAWI
Dam: SWIFT ROSE
Dam’s Sire: INVINCIBLE SPIRIT
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 4-0-0-5

Dam was a sharp 2YO and this high-class performer quickly followed in her footsteps, winning his first four starts, the first three of which came at Kempton. Quickly transferred that All-Weather form to the turf when winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. Surprisingly poor effort when only 6 lengths seventh to ROSALLION in St James's Palace Stakes last time, failing to muster any sort of challenge before being eased. Plenty of talent, but also plenty to prove after that run.

FACTEUR CHEVAL (5YO, Gelding)

Trainer: Jerome Reynier

Sire: RIBCHESTER
Dam: JAWLAAT
Dam’s Sire: SHAMARDAL
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 6-4-3-15

Very smart gelding who won the Dubai Turf at Meydan (by a short head from NAMUR) in March, his first win - including at G1 level - since landing a G3 at Saint-Cloud in his native France in October 2022. Off 12 weeks and below form when 8½ lengths sixth to CHARYN in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, one of a pair of horses isolated on the far side of the track. Usually consistent, so safe to assume that wasn’t his true running, but has something to find on ratings against some exciting youngsters.
