Nunthorpe Stakes Statistics (23 Aug, Friday)
About the barriers
Nunthorpe Stakes (2019 to 2023)
Barrier | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
1-5 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
6-10 | 1 | 3 | 3 |
11-15 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
16 and above | - | - | - |
Low draws have provided the most winners but given that those in middle barriers have finished second on three occasions, it makes sense to give them equal weighting. High numbers haven’t enjoyed as much success but did have the 1-2-3 in 2022. Barrier 6 has provided one winner, two seconds and a third over the last five years.
About the Jockey
Hot Jockey: Hollie Doyle
Year | Hollie Doyle’s rides in the Nunthorpe Stakes | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | BRADSELL | 3 |
2022 | THE PLATINUM QUEEN | 2 |
2021 | CHIPOTLE | 9 |
2020 | - | - |
2019 | - | - |
Jim Crowley is the only jockey to have won this twice in recent years but both came aboard BATTAASH, owned by his retainer shadwell, and they do not have an entry this year. He will ride FROST AT DAWN. Daniel Tudhope has been placed twice, as has Hollie Doyle (in the last two years), and she looks the jockey to concentrate on as she again rides last year’s third BRADSELL.
About the Trainer
Hot Trainer: Archie Watson
Year | Archie Watson’s runners in the Nassau Stakes | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | BRADSELL | 3 |
2022 | - | - |
2021 | DRAGON SYMBOL | 3 |
2020 | - | - |
2019 | SOLDIER’S CALL | 2 |
Charles Hills has enjoyed success with BATTAASH but does not have any runner this year, so it's worth concentrating on Archie Watson who has saddled three individual runners to make the frame. The most recent of them, BRADSELL, was third last year and makes a quick return to action after an impressive reappearance win in France last time out.
About the Favourites
Nunthorpe Stakes Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)
Year | Favourite | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | HIGHFIELD PRINCESS | 2 |
2022 | ROYAL ACLAIM | 6 |
2021 | SUESA | 4 |
2020 | BATTAASH | 1 |
2019 | TEN SOVEREIGNS | 6 |
The last five favourites have not been disgraced with all finishing in the first six, but a record of only one win and one place does not suggest that extra weight should be given to their chance.
About Overseas Runners

2019 | SO PERFECT TEN SOVEREIGNS FAIRYLAND |

This is not a race that has attracted a large overseas contingent in recent years although two of their number, SUESA (from France) and TEN SOVEREIGNS (Ireland) were sent off as favourite. However, further back in recent history overseas runners have had a bigger bearing on events with ORTENSIA winning this race for Australia in 2012. Her compatriot, ASFOORA, is a leading contender this year.
