Racing Statistics

International Stakes Statistics (21 Aug, Wednesday)

About the barriers

International Stakes (2019 to 2023)

Barrier 1st 2nd 3rd
1-5 2 4 5
6-10 3 1 0
11-15 - - -
16 and above - - -

Small fields have been the order of the day with, in reverse order, 9, 5, 7, 6, and 4 runners going to post and it’s hard to think that the barrier position has had a significant effect on the outcome.

About the Jockeys

Hot Jockey: Ryan Moore

Year Ryan Moore’s rides in the International Stakes Finishing Position
2023 PADDINGTON 3
2022 HIGH DEFINITION 6
2021 LOVE 3
2020 MAGICAL 2
2019 JAPAN 1

No jockey has won the race more than once in this five year period with William Buick, Ryan Moore, Frankie Dettori, Jim Crowley and David Egan the successful riders. Moore has also been third twice and second once. Moore will partner likely favourite CITY OF TROY if he lines up.

About the Trainers

Hot Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Year Aidan O’Brien’s runners in the International Stakes Finishing Position
2023 PADDINGTON 3
2022 HIGH DEFINITION 6
2021 LOVE 3
2020 MAGICAL 2
2019 JAPAN 1

John and Thady Gosden have saddled two winners but look unlikely to have a leading contender in 2024. William Haggas, Charlie Appleby and Aidan O’Brien have been the other successful trainers and the latter has also sent out two thirds and a second.

About the Favourites

International Stakes Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)

Year Favourite Finishing Position
2023 PADDINGTON 3
2022 BAAEED 1
2021 MISHRIFF 1
2020 GHAIYYATH 1
2019 CRYSTAL OCEAN 2

The favourite has enjoyed a good record in the International Stakes of late and came within a head of winning three of the five renewals. PADDINGTON was a rare disappointment last season when only third of four but was still beaten little more than a length by the winner. The likely favourite CITY OF TROY is seeking a hat-trick in G1 level here.

Only two of the above weren’t trained by Aidan O’Brien and only one wasn’t trained in Ireland with CHEVAL GRAND representing Japan, as DUREZZA could this year. Both Ireland and France have some strong candidates in 2024 but O’Brien has the ace in the pack with CITY OF TROY.
