Goodwood Cup Day (30 Jul, Tuesday)
About the barriers
Goodwood Cup (2019 to 2023)
Barrier | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
1-5 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
6-10 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
11-15 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
16 and above | - | - | - |
The 2023 renewal of the Goodwood Cup attracted 11 runners, the largest field size in the last five years with the other runnings featuring between seven and nine runners. The results have been fairly well spread with barriers 1-5 winning three and 6-10 two with those numbers reversed for the runner-ups. Barrier 2 has provided two winners but no other runners have hit the frame. Barrier 1 has just one second placed finisher and those berthed in 3 have a similarly modest record with only a third to their name. Barrier 6, in contrast, has three of the five seconds.
About the Jockeys
Hot Jockey: Ryan Moore
Year | Ryan Moore’s rides in the Goodwood Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | EMILY DICKINSON | 2 |
2022 | KYPRIOS | 1 |
2021 | SERPENTINE | 6 |
2020 | SANTIAGO | 3 |
2019 | SOUTHERN FRANCE | 4 |
Frankie Dettori, now based in America, is the only jockey to have won the Goodwood Cup twice in this period with Hollie Doyle, Tom Marquand and Ryan Moore the other successful jockeys. Doyle has also partnered a third but Moore has that position and a second to his name. Andrea Atzeni has finished second twice. Moore’s success came aboard KYPRIOS in 2022 and that runner returned from injury to record a stunning victory in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and is due to return to try and regain this title as well.
About the Trainers
Hot Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Year | John & Thady Gosden’s runners in the Goodwood Cup | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | COURAGE MON AMI | 6 |
2022 | STRADIVARIUS | 2 |
2021 | - | - |
2020 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
2019 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
STRADIVARIUS won this race on four straight occasions for Gosden (Senior) with the last two of those victories coming in 2019 and 2020. Gosden now trains in partnership with his son Thady and the pair combined to saddle STRADIVARIUS to finish a neck second to KYPRIOS in 2022. They were also responsible for last season’s beaten favourite COURAGE MON AMI. KYPRIOS will be popular but the Gosdens could have a strong hand against him with GREGORY and SWEET WILLIAM, third in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, all holding entries.
About the Favourites
Goodwood Cup Favourites Statistics (2019 to 2023)
Year | Favourite | Finishing Position |
---|---|---|
2023 | COURAGE MON AMI | 6 |
2022 | KYPRIOS | 1 |
2021 | TRUESHAN | 1 |
2020 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
2019 | STRADIVARIUS | 1 |
COURAGE MON AMI is the only one of the last five market leaders to have let the side down with STRADIVARIUS (twice) and KYPRIOS joined by TRUESHAN in landing the odds. All of the favourites were returned at short odds and that will likely be the case again if KYPRIOS lines up on the day. QUICKTHORN did record an extraordinary success at long odds last year with the front-runner slipping his field and keeping up the gallop to win by six lengths without seeing a rival.

All of the overseas runners in the Goodwood Cup have hailed from Ireland with the majority emerging from the powerful Ballydoyle Stables of Aidan O’Brien. KYPRIOS is the only one of his runners to have collected top spot but his representatives have also finished second, third and fourth (twice) so can be deemed to have a good record. KYPRIOS will be the stable’s number one this year.
