There was no lack of filles or mares running in the Australian Cup in the past 5 years. However, only DUAIS claimed the title. She is even the sole Australian Cup winner in her own sex after MAKYBE DIVA in 2005. It is interesting to see if the two high class mares PRIDE OF JENNI, who beat MR BRIGHTSIDE twice in the Kennedy Champions Mile and All-Star Mile, and the G1 Champions Stakes winner ATISHU can be another.

No worries for wide draws

Year Australian Cup Winner Barrier
2023 CASCADIAN 10
2022 DUAIS 8
2021 HOMESMAN 14
2020 FIFTY STARS 13
2019 HARLEM        4

Breaking from out wide seems not an absolute disadvantage for the Australian Cup. In fact, 3 of the last 5 winners including CASCADIAN, HOMESMAN and FIFTY STARS were from a double-digit barrier. There are only 9 starters for the Australian Cup this year with defending champion CASCADIAN and former Melbourne Cup Champion VOW AND DECLARE from the widest barrier 8 and 9, but that may not be a big problem for them.
