The Derby Stakes is run on Epsom Racecourse on the first Saturday of June over 2400m. First established in 1780, it is the most famous British Flat race of them all and known worldwide as a race that can make stallions; some of whom have gone on to stand around the world long before shuttling stallions became commonplace.
The list of famous Derby winners is long but many would vote for SEA BIRD – who went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – as the best of the last century. The famous MILL REEF, beaten by BRIGADIER GERARD in the 2000 Guineas, also completed the Derby-Arc double. While NIJINSKY, SEA THE STARS and other household names still live long in memory, the late GALILEO is invariably the modern-day standard to define Epsom excellence, having sired 5 winners further as a stallion, since his very own victory in 2001.

Derby Stakes Results
The 2024 renewal of the 2400m G1 Derby Stakes was won by the favourite CITY OF TROY in brilliant fashion, bouncing back from a disappointing run in the 2000 Guineas to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with a record extending tenth success in the Classic. Forced to race in midfield on the inside by his draw in barrier 1, CITY OF TROY got a nice gap between horses but took the opportunity in no uncertain terms. Quickening impressively, he took up the running and hit the line strongly to win by 2 ¾ lengths.
All options are open for CITY OF TROY with the Eclipse at Sandown, King George Stakes at Ascot and the Travers Stakes at Saratoga all on the table. AMBIENTE FRIENDLY travelled strongly and finished a clear second but had no answer to the winner. LOS ANGELES, also trained by O’Brien, raced prominently but proved one-paced in third.
