1000 Guineas

The 1000 Guineas Stakes is run 24 hours later than the 2000 Guineas Stakes over the same course and distance and for the same purse. It was also established by The Jockey Club and Sir Charles Bunbury but the fillies’ contest was only first run in 1814, five years after the colt’s version; both races were named after the original total prize purse that they carried.

Aidan O’Brien has won this race seven times but is behind Robert Robson who sent out nine winners from 1818. PEBBLES is one of the most famous British mares having won the Eclipse before becoming the first British-trained winner of a Breeders’ Cup race and she announced herself as a potential star when winning the 1000 Guineas Stakes in 1984. The following year OH SO SHARP was the winner and she went on to win the Oaks and the St. Leger Stakes, thus completing the fillies’ Triple Crown.

1000 Guineas Results

The 2024 renewal of the 1600m G1 1000 Guineas was won by ELMALKA, providing trainer Roger Varian with a first Guineas success. The win was also a notable one for jockey Silvestre de Sousa who only returned to Britain this season from Hong Kong.

STAR STYLE led the field at a fast pace with FALLEN ANGEL and RAMATUELLE not far behind; it was the French filly who looked as if she was going to win 200m out having moved easily into the lead. However, the strong pace told in the end and it was another hold-up performer – as in the 2000 Guineas – who prevailed, with ELMALKA timing her run perfectly.

The fast-finishing PORTA FORTUNA pipped RAMATUELLE for second, with TAMFANA another who ran on well from off the pace to fill fourth spot. The Aidan O’Brien-trained YLANG YLANG fared best of the well-fancied runners in fifth.
