2000 Guineas

The 2000 Guineas Stakes is run over a straight 1600m on the Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket. First staged in 1809, the 2000 Guineas Stakes was established by The Jockey Club under the guidance of Sir Charles Bunbury and within decades was known as one of the most important races in the British calendar, becoming one of the five Classics; a concept adopted by many other jurisdictions.

Aidan O’Brien has dominated the race like no other in recent years and is the leading trainer with 10 successes although he is without a win since 2019. The brilliant FRANKEL produced an astonishing performance in 2011 but he is only one of the more recent big names in a star-studded cast that includes the likes of SEA THE STARS and BRIGADIER GERARD who came out on top in a race for the ages with MILL REEF in 1971.

2000 Guineas Results

The 2024 renewal of the 1600m G1 2000 Guineas was won by the unbeaten NOTABLE SPEECH in exciting fashion with the winner becoming the first since 1938 not to have raced as a juvenile and the first not to have previously raced on turf. The Charlie Appleby trained colt was held-up towards the rear before taking closer order with 400m to run, he then displayed a smart turn of foot to quicken clear of the field, winning by 1 ½ lengths.

NOTABLE SPEECH is expected to remain at this distance and could head to Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes where he is likely to re-oppose the second and third from Newmarket, ROSALLION and HAATEM. Hot favourite CITY OF TROY trailed home in ninth place with trainer Aidan O’Brien reporting that his charge had, unusually, got upset in the barrier.

The opening colts’ Classic of the season is a famous prize in its own right, but the leading Derby-winning trainer Aidan O’Brien is increasingly using the race as a step to Epsom for his elite middle-distance colts. AUGUSTE RODIN ran in the race last year before winning the Derby, while Guineas fourth MADHMOON finished second at Epsom in 2019.
