Palace House Stakes (4 May)
Taking place on the first weekend in May, Newmarket’s Guineas Festival sees three days of excellent racing. The 2000 Guineas takes place on the Saturday and is supported by the G3 Palace House Stakes.
SOLE POWER (2013 and 2014) and MABS CROSS (2018 and 2019) are the only dual winners of the race, and it’s likely that last year’s winner VADREAM may face a tough task as he bids to follow in their footsteps unless the ground is unusually testing once again.
LIVE IN THE DREAM, last year’s runner-up , is a very fast sprinter who went on to win the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, could be another leading contender.
Diomed Stakes & Princess Elizabeth Stakes (1 Jun)
A month later at Epsom, two G3 races, the Diomed Stakes and Princess Elizabeth Stakes, complement the centrepiece of the Derby Stakes.
The Diomed Stakes is named after the inaugural winner of the Derby Stakes and has been a happy hunting ground for older horses, with four 8YOs winning the race since 2016. REGAL REALITY took last year’s renewal and could head back for another crack aged 9 after a recent spin around Lingfield this winter.
Frankie Dettori has crowned as the seven times winning jockey in Princess Elizabeth Stakes, including last year’s renewal on PROSPEROUS VOYAGE. The filly had previously finished behind VIA SISTINA in the Dahlia Stakes. There have been three dual winners since 2006, so she will be a leading contender if returning to defend her crown.
