Key Contenders for the 2000 Guineas

CITY OF TROY

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Sire: JUSTIFY
Dam: TOGETHER FOREVER
Dam’s Sire: GALILEO
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 3-0-0-3

CITY OF TROY easily won the G2 Superlative Stakes on Newmarket’s July Course last year. Then, he had another impressive victory in the Dewhurst Stakes and was crowned Europe’s Top 2YO in the classifications and has been Guineas favourite ever since. Said to have done well physically over the winter and due to make his seasonal debut ideally in the Guineas for Aidan O’Brien who has won the race 10 times, with Ryan Moore riding two of them.

ROSALLION

Trainer: Richard Hannon

Sire: BLUE POINT
Dam: ROSALINE
Dam’s Sire: NEW APPROACH
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 3-0-1-4

ROSALLION was impressed when winning at Ascot in July and then didn’t get enough cover in a slowly-run race when only third in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. Later, he stayed on strongly to win the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp. His trainer Richard Hannon won the 2000 Guineas back in 2014, while his jockey Sean Levey is yet to win this prize. Will head to Newmarket without a prep run.

NOTABLE SPEECH

Trainer: Charlie Appleby

Sire: DUBAWI
Dam: SWIFT ROSE
Dam’s Sire: INVINCIBLE SPIRIT
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 3-0-0-3

Only recently entered the 2000 Guineas picture, NOTABLE SPEECH didn’t run as a 2YO, making his racecourse debut in January on the All-Weather track at Kempton. Then. he had an impressive victory, clocking some smart sectionals in the finish, while the form of his second run was boosted when the runner-up CUBAN TIGER won a Listed race. Looking at the scene of all three starts, NOTABLE SPEECH yet to race on grass and contest a Group race.

HAATEM

Trainer: Richard Hannon

Sire: PHOENIX OF SPAIN
Dam: HARD WALNUT
Dam’s Sire: CAPE CROSS
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 3-1-2-10

Chased home CITY OF TROY in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket and improved again when landing the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. Unable to repeat that form on next two starts over shorter but shaped better when fifth to CITY OF TROY in the Dewhurst Stakes and then took form to a new level when stepped up in distance to win the Craven Stakes on reappearance. Helps give trainer Richard Hannon a strong hand in the race, but statistic shows that the last Craven winner to follow up in the Guineas was HAAFHD in 2004.

TASK FORCE

Trainer: Ralph Beckett

Sire: FRANKEL
Dam: SPECIAL DUTY
Dam’s Sire: HENNESSY
No. of 1-2-3-Starts: 2-1-0-3

Bred for the job with his sire FRANKEL and dam SPECIAL DUTY both winning their respective Guineas. Reported to have been immature as a 2YO but his physical progress over the winter has pleased his trainer who will send him straight to the Guineas. That immaturity saw him kept to 1200m as a juvenile, winning twice before finishing second to an unbeaten colt VANDEEK in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.
