TURNBULL STAKES

Not only is the Turnbull Stakes a great race every year, its honour roll proves how important it is each and every Victorian Spring carnival. The big Flemington track provides every horse its chance plus provides the trainers, jockeys and connections a great guide to how the horse is going. From the early days of BERNBOROUGH and RISING FAST, the Turnbull was much sought after. TOBIN BRONZE, GALILEE, DULCIFY, SUPER IMPOSE and BETTER LOOSEN UP then took up the mantle. In recent years SUNLINE, NORTHERLY, MAKYBE DIVA and the great one WINX maintained the excellence. Last year, in a slowly run race, SMOKIN’ ROMANS was able to sit right on the speed and kick clear to hold a good margin and win the G1. The eventual Melbourne Cup winner GOLD TRIP was closing nicely into fifth spot.

Turnbull Stakes Results

The 2023 edition of the G1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) was won by the 2022 Melbourne Cup winner GOLD TRIP in very exciting fashion. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained horse settled at the rear of the field after jumping from the widest barrier, before rounding up his rivals and charging down the centre of the track to win comfortably by 1-1/4 lengths.

He will now head to either the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate. GOLD TRIP defeated WEST WIND BLOWS, who will target the Caulfield Cup next, and SOULCOMBE who is also on a path toward the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup. Hong Kong’s star ROMANTIC WARRIOR rounded out the top-four, with both trainer Danny Shum and jockey James McDonald saying he will benefit from the run and be much better when lining up for the Cox Plate on October 28.
