It’s hard for the racing fans to neglect the strong performances of the international runners in the Melbourne Cup. In the past ten renewals, there should at least be one international runner finishing in the first four and a total of four winners have been achieved. Other global winners in the Melbourne Cup include DUNADEN (2011), AMERICAIN (2010), DELTA BLUES (2006), MEDIA PUZZLE (2002) and VINTAGE CROP (1993). The 2023 edition of the Melbourne Cup is also an international affair with VAUBAN, ABSURDE and OKITA SOUSHI from Ireland and BREAKUP from Japan all strive to shine in the highest honour in Australian Racing.

Wide barriers should be no concern for Melbourne Cup

Year Melbourne Cup Winner Barrier
2022 GOLD TRIP 13
2021 VERRY ELLEEGANT 18
2020 TWILIGHT PAYMENT 12
2019 VOW AND DECLARE 21
2018 CROSS COUNTER 19

Many raise concerns about drawing out in a field of 24 but with a long straight to the first turn, there is plenty of opportunity to slot in with cover. Backing that up, in the last 25 years, 17 horses have drawn double figure gates. Included in that are the last 5 and of those, there are 18, 19 & 21.
