STORM BOY will need to take a good step forward from his last run.

If he brings his best form from Australia he’ll be there or thereabouts, but we didn’t see that at the Curragh so it’s hard to be too confident. It’s a good renewal, with horses from France and Japan in there too.

Satono Reve probably has the best bits of form on offer, having run third and second behind Hong Kong’s top sprinter Ka Ying Rising. I rode work on him the week before Ascot and he did everything nicely. He’ll handle quick ground, though this will be the first time he’s run over a straight six furlongs, but he’s quite a relaxed horse, so I don’t see that being a problem.

I like Topgear too. He impressed me last year in the Prix du Pin at Longchamp and then again on his reappearance at the same track. He’s one to keep on side.

Inisherin is the other one I know a bit about, having won on him at York. I think he’ll improve for that and shouldn’t be underestimated.

‘We’ll come to Ascot with plenty of confidence’ – Bullish Reynier hoping Lazzat can break Royal Ascot duck

French trainer Jerome Reynier is hoping Lazzat can provide him with a breakthrough success at Royal Ascot as he gears up for a tilt at the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting.

A regular figure at the Royal meeting in recent years thanks to the talents of both Zarakem and Facteur Cheval, the Marseille based Jerome Reynier is hoping that Lazzat’s first trip to Ascot can be the one to have him celebrating loudest in Berkshire.

Carrying the colours of the leading Kazakhstan-born businessman Nurlan Bizakov, Lazzat enjoyed a fruitful 2024 campaign, winning six consecutive races including the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

A notable second-place in the valuable Golden Eagle over 1500m at Rosehill before finishing ninth in the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin rounded out a memorable season, leaving connections excited about what Lazzat’s four-year-old career may hold.

Despite suffering a shock defeat over 1600m when only fourth in the Prix Altipan at Saint-Cloud on his reappearance, the gelded son of Territories was sent off a general odds-on chance to get back to winning ways when dropped to 1200m in the Listed Prix Servanne at Chantilly earlier this month.

Always towards the fore under the owners retained rider Cristian Demuro, Lazzat produced a dazzling performance to score by five and a half lengths, with Clive Cox’s subsequent Curragh Group 2 Greenlands Stakes hero James’s Delight back in fifth.

Reynier now plans to remain sprinting with his talented four-year-old, who currently heads the ante-post betting for the 1200m Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday 21st June.

Reynier said: “Lazzat is in good shape, we’re very happy with him,” “He kept his unbeaten record on straight courses the other day at Chantilly, clocking a really fast time and he beat, by nine lengths, the winner of one of this weekend’s Group races at the Curragh.

“The form is good, and we know he’s a very good horse; he’s going to specialise in sprint distances so we will be aiming for the Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

“We’re quite excited to have the ante-post favourite for that race, we’re going to prepare him the best we can and hope for the best.

“He doesn’t need anyone, he made all last time out in Chantilly, and he doesn’t mind the ground. He can go on good, firm, fast, soft – anything.

Japanese hopes rest with top sprinter Satono Reve

Royal Ascot has always been popular across the world and with an increased participation from Australia, United States, Hong Kong and Japan in recent years, it has become a truly international affair.

This year, the hopes of Japan will rest with the Noriyuki Hori-trained Satono Reve – an improving six-year-old sprinter, who rose to the top ranks of the 1200m division in Japan with victory in the Grade 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in late March.

A son of champion sprinter Lord Kanaloa, who stands at the Shadai Stallion Station, Satono Reve has continued to progress with age. Winner of the 1200m Grade 3 Hakodate Spring Stakes in June 2024, he was given his first opportunity at the top level when third in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint in December, where he finished third behind Ka Ying Rising. With a victory at Chukyo in the aforementioned Grade 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen under his belt, he returned to Sha Tin for another battle against Ka Ying Rising, this time finishing second in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize on 27 April.

It was enough for connections to believe Satono Reve had earned his place at Royal Ascot and the six-year-old will have his first European outing in the 1200m Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on Saturday of the Royal meeting.

Based at James Horton’s yard in Newmarket, Satono Reve enjoyed a final gallop on the July Course on 11 July, pulling clear of his work companion in impressive fashion.

Trainer Nori said: “After arriving from Hong Kong, Satono Reve had some time to recover before steadily building up his training.

“Today, we completed his final gallop before the race – a five-furlong piece on the July Course at Newmarket, ridden by Ryan Moore.

“Although it is a different environment from what he is used to, he has been coming along well thanks to the warm support of James Horton, his team and everyone involved.”

Whilst Japan is yet to secure a winner at Royal Ascot, the nation has consistently been represented by top-class horses. Ingrandire was the first Japanese horse to make the trip to the Berkshire course in 2004, finishing ninth in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup. He was quickly followed in the next year by Keeneland Swan, tenth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.

It was another six years before Japan sent another runner and whilst A Shin Hikari started favourite to take the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes in 2016, he was unable to feature. Shahryar, who finished fourth in the 2022 renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, remains the best Japanese result from the ten representatives and Satono Reve will be looking to improve the record in a competitive Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.

Leading contenders Lazzat, Inisherin and Satono Reve have been confirmed for the final Group 1 of the week at Royal Ascot, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (3.40) on Saturday.

Lazzat will be making his debut for Sheikh Tamim’s Wathnan Racing in the 6f contest, where his opponents could include the same owner’s Flora Of Bermuda and Kind Of Blue.

A total of 18 horses remain at the latest forfeit stage for Saturday’s contest, with James Doyle, Wathnan’s retained rider, jocked up to ride favourite Lazzat.

Doyle will also have a strong chance in the Wokingham Stakes (5.00) after the Wathnan-owned Shartash, a 20-1 shot for the race his trainer Archie Watson won in 2023, was among 77 horses left in the contest.

Ante-post favourite More Thunder, leading chance Jarraaf and Symbol Of Honour, the Godolphin Group 2-winning three-year-old who cannot contest the Commonwealth Cup due to being a gelding, are also still engaged in the race.
