SEE IT AGAIN will partner Piere Strydom in the 2024 Cape Town Met.

Despite being run under weight-for-age conditions the Cape Town Met is usually a competitive event. However, this year, this G1 race over 2000m at Kenilworth on Saturday 27 January is all about SEE IT AGAIN. This son of TWICE OVER has been the talking point of this year’s race for a number of reasons.

Firstly, now 4YO, his form has been remarkable. He came into his own in February last year when winning the G1 Cape Derby over the same course and distance at the Cape Town Met. Since then, he has participated in seven more races, winning three times and finishing second in the other four. At weight-for-age, he is regarded as the best horse in the country over 2000m.

He is trained by Michael Roberts, an 11-time champion jockey in South Africa and British Champion in 1992, but while he has ridden a Met winner, Roberts has yet to train a Met winner.  By pure chance, veteran jockey Piere Strydom, a six-time South Africa champion, was engaged to ride SEE IT AGAIN in last year’s Cape Derby. After that decisive victory, owner Nic Jonsson agreed he could stay with the horse at least until this year’s Cape Town Met. Strydom has hinted that victory in this race would herald his retirement from the saddle. The decision to retire CHARLES DICKENS to stud has opened the door further for SEE IT AGAIN as he looked the main threat.

PACAYA will be one of the five runners from Justin Snaith’s yard.

Justin Snaith has five runners and there does not appear to be too much between them all. But there was a lot to like about the run of ROYAL AUSSIE in the G1 King’s Plate over 1600m as he ran on well to finish third behind SEE IT AGAIN and CHARLES DICKENS although he does try 2000m for the first time.

Snaith also has PACAYA and MUCHO DINERO in the race, the former ridden by JP van der Merwe while Grant van Niekerk has elected to ride MUCHO DINERO, who has won his last four races.
