Striving for a fifth title despite fatigue and soreness, Joao Moreira believes Zac Purton has a superior book of rides as the arch-rivals square off for the Hong Kong jockeys\u2019 championship at an epic season finale at Sha Tin on Saturday (16 July).<\/p>
Locked with fellow four-time Hong Kong champion Purton on 132 wins for the season, Moreira trails by the slimmest margins because his tally contains two dead-heat wins compared to Purton\u2019s one dead-heat, meaning the Brazilian has to produce one more winner on the 11-race card than Purton to claim overall honours.<\/p>
Having led Purton by 18 wins in February, Moreira has 10 rides tomorrow \u2013 one fewer than his Australian adversary \u2013 and is optimistic Jumbo Fortune and Chevalier Prince, who contest the final two races of the meeting, can help deliver the title despite his belief Purton is best placed to succeed.<\/p>
\u201cHonestly, I think Zac has a better and a stronger book of rides than me on the last day but it\u2019s probably going to go all the way to the wire,\u201d said Moreira, champion in 2014\/15, 2015\/16, 2016\/17 and 2020\/21.<\/p>
\u201cI have to treat it as a normal race meeting so I just try to perform at my best but, physically, I\u2019m very tired, very stressed – that\u2019s not a secret to anybody. (I\u2019m) extremely tired, destroyed \u2013 (in) broken pieces, to be honest, but it\u2019s been great.<\/p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”3226″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” onclick=”link_image”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
\u201cZac has pushed me to my limit. I always say this rivalry that has been created \u2013 whenever we get out there, we try to beat each other, but we don\u2019t bring it outside (the track). We get along well.<\/p>
\u201cI kind of admire Zac very much. He\u2019s a great rider, very intelligent. He does his job very well and what he\u2019s done this season is admirable. He proves to be a warrior and me, myself, being able to put him in that position where he has to do his very best, I\u2019ve got to be proud of myself.<\/p>
\u201cI think we help each other to bring the best out of each other. If Zac wasn\u2019t there, my numbers wouldn\u2019t be the same, they would be much less.<\/p>
\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to get my body a little bit better and I\u2019ve been working with the doctors and hopefully that can really get me to feeling 100 percent when it comes to the races and just take it race by race.<\/p>
\u201cIf it (the championship) is meant to be mine, it\u2019s going to be. If it\u2019s meant to be Zac\u2019s, it\u2019s going to be. Wherever this trophy lands, it\u2019s going to be deserved. If Zac wins it, he deserves it. If I win it, I believe I deserve it, too.<\/p>
\u201cI\u2019m just gonna take it race by race.\u201d<\/p>
Reviving memories of Douglas Whyte\u2019s titanic effort to overcome a 16-win deficit to Brett Prebble before out-pointing the Australian 100-99 in 2009\/10, Purton has put himself in a position to add to titles won in 2013\/14, 2017\/18, 2018\/19 and 2019\/20 despite suffering multiple injuries in a fall in December.<\/p>
Whyte, a record-breaking 13-time champion jockey, says this season\u2019s contest will be settled via a number of factors familiar to both riders \u2013 the ability to handle the occasion, good fortune and desire.<\/p>
\u201cIt\u2019s going to boil down to a bit of luck in running but, in my opinion, whoever wants it more will win it,\u201d the South African said. \u201cIt\u2019s all about focus and the person who can eliminate bad luck and wants it the most, will win.\u201d<\/p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”3227″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” onclick=”link_image”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
While Moreira is upbeat about Caspar Fownes-trained Jumbo Fortune in the Class 2 Joy And Fun Handicap (1200m), he will have to contend with Purton aboard Manfred Man\u2019s rising star Lucky Sweynesse, winner of four races from six starts.<\/p>
It is a similar tale in the season-closing Class 3 Sight Winner Handicap (1600m), when the \u2018Magic Man\u2019 partners last-start winner Chevalier Prince for Frankie Lor, while Purton takes the reins aboard talented Tuchel for John Size.<\/p>
With 90 wins to 84, Lor holds a virtually impregnable lead over his former boss and 11-time champion Size but, with typical modesty, insists the championship tussle is still to run its full course.<\/p>
\u201cI still need to try really hard to win,\u201d Lor said. \u201cThis is my fifth year as a trainer and I\u2019m really happy with my team at Sha Tin and Conghua, so I need to say thank you to my team \u2013 they do a good job for me.<\/p>
\u201cI try my best to get a really good result and I can get the championship this season, my old boss will be really happy. I learnt a lot of things from him when I worked for him. He is a top trainer.\u201d<\/p>
Matthew Chadwick (55) is poised to snare the Tony Cruz Award as the leading home-grown jockey with a five-win lead over Vincent Ho (50). Derek Leung is next with 47 victories for the term.<\/p>
