{"id":3174,"date":"2022-07-12T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-12T08:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ctr-campaigns.hkjc.com\/season-end\/?p=3174"},"modified":"2022-07-12T16:59:38","modified_gmt":"2022-07-12T08:59:38","slug":"derek-leung-hunts-more-success-with-a-strong-hand-at-happy-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/campaigns.hkjc.com\/season-end\/en\/news\/derek-leung-hunts-more-success-with-a-strong-hand-at-happy-valley","title":{"rendered":"Derek Leung hunts more success with a strong hand at Happy Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3176&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<p>Currently annexing his best season to date, Derek Leung is plotting even loftier targets next term as he looks to achieve his first 50-win campaign in Hong Kong at either Happy Valley\u2019s final fixture on Wednesday night (13 July) or at the Sha Tin season finale this Saturday (16 July). \u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019m lucky, I hope I can get over 50 winners \u2013 I will try my best over these last two meetings and no matter what, this season has been a very good season for me.<\/p><p>\u201cI hope next season I can keep it up and break my own record again, if I have support like I have these last couple of months then I\u2019m sure next season will be even better,\u201d Leung said.<\/p><p>Three wins off the half-century mark, Leung\u2019s 47 this term have smashed last season\u2019s previous best of 39 for a campaign and Sunday\u2019s (10 July) treble has the 33-year-old feeling good as he plots the near-impossible mission of catching Matthew Chadwick as this season\u2019s leading homegrown rider in the race for the Tony Cruz Award.<\/p><p>\u201cI returned from suspension and I had a few quality rides in my hand, I was pretty surprised I rode three winners but I will try my best to ride a few more,\u201d Leung said.<\/p><p>Leung starred at Sha Tin last weekend as the jockeys\u2019 championship race between Zac Purton and Joao Moreira ended in stalemate as Purton holds a two-win lead over his great title rival (132-130) as the final fixtures loom large.    <\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a very good season, I\u2019ve broken my own record and I hope I can keep going up and get a few more,\u201d Leung said.<\/p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3177&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<p>At Happy Valley tomorrow, Leung teams with Me Tsui on three occasions and twice in Class 4 as he looks to give the handler an all-important victory in Class 4 level or above to avoid Tsui receiving a strike for failing to reach the trainer\u2019s performance benchmarks. \u00a0<\/p><p>Leung won aboard Sergeant Pepper for Tsui in June and gets back aboard the 59-rater in the Class 4 Broadwood Handicap (1000m) with top-weight allotted.<\/p><p>\u201cThe horse is in Class 4 and he\u2019s always positive, so he\u2019s straightforward and he always has a chance there (at Happy Valley),\u201d Leung said.<\/p><p>Sergeant Pepper \u2013 a four-year-old gelding from Australia \u2013 was previously with Bjorn Baker in Sydney where he was a two-time winner Down Under. Having drawn gate eight, Leung still expects to be positive aboard the bay son of I Am Invincible.<\/p><p>\u201cHopefully it\u2019ll be easy to find the front and I\u2019m sure that he\u2019ll run well,\u201d Leung said.<\/p><p>Last start, the gelding went down by a head over tomorrow night\u2019s course and distance.<\/p>\u201cMaybe (135lb being a concern), If he can sit in front with a soft lead then I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be there,\u201d Leung said.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"videoBox\" data-poster=\"http:\/\/campaigns.hkjc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/572\/news-220712-v1.jpg\" data-link=\"replay-full\/2022\/20220622\/03\/eng\/replay-full_20220622_03_eng\"  data-wa=\"\" data-themecolor=\"\"><\/div><p class=\"caption\">Sergeant Pepper gets on the board in Hong Kong.<\/p>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<p>Later on, Leung gets the leg-up on the in-form Prime Minister for the HK$2.4 million Class 2 Wong Nai Chung Handicap (1650m) after he was narrowly touched off by Packing Award last start.<\/p><p>\u201cThe horse has been in good form, he\u2019s more mature because before he was always keen and he pulled but now, this season, he is more relaxed in the race and that\u2019s how he can finish (off the race),\u201d Leung said.<\/p><p>Prime Minister struggled for early form but has hit his straps with two wins this campaign for trainer Ricky Yiu \u2013 who on Sunday \u2013 surged past 50 winners this term.<\/p><p>\u201cHis last run was huge, I think the winner is pretty good, this time again it will be tough but I am sure he will run well,\u201d Leung said. \u201cThe outside draw is a little bit against him but we always ride him quietly, so I just hope there\u2019s a fast pace which is better for him.\u201d<\/p><p>Leung partnered Telecom Fighters to finish third last start, however, this time he comes up against the five-year-old who steps out under Karis Teetan in tomorrow night\u2019s Class 2 feature.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ve done well on him before, of course, I haven\u2019t ridden him for quite a while but it\u2019s nice to get back aboard him,\u201d Teetan said.<\/p><p>Teetan remains the only jockey \u2013 along with Joao Moreira \u2013 to have won aboard Telecom Fighters (135lb) in the past.
