RACING INFO
STANDARD CHARTERED CHAMPIONS & CHATER CUP
The Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup is one of only three races over 2400m in Hong Kong each term. It is also the final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown and the final Group 1 of the Hong Kong season.
The race has a history that dates back to 1870, when it was known as the Champion Stakes. In 1926, it was renamed the Chater Cup, after former Club Chairman Sir Catchick Paul Chater, before it was retitled the Champions & Chater Cup in 1955.
It was run over a variety of distances until it was switched to 2400m in 1995 and gained international G1 status in 2015. The Standard Chartered Bank has sponsored the Champions & Chater Cup since 2010. The race’s prize money is HK$13 million this year.
Notable winners of the Champions & Chater Cup include four-time champion River Verdon (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994) and three-time winners Super Win (1975, 1976, 1977), Silver Lining (1978, 1979, 1981) and Viva Pataca (2006, 2007, 2009), as well as Co-Tack, Indigenous, Vengeance Of Rain, California Memory, Werther, Pakistan Star, Exultant and Russian Emperor (2022, 2023). In 2024 Rebel’s Romance became the first internationally trained horse to win the feature.
